Lafayette Ronald Hubbard ( Tilden , March 13 of 1911 - Creston, January 24 of 1986 2 ), better known as L. Ron Hubbard, or LRH was a writer pulp American and founder of the Church of Scientology . After establishing a career as an author, most famous for his stories of science fiction and fantasy , he developed a self-help system called Dianetics which was first published in May 1950. Hubbard subsequently developed his ideas in a wide range of doctrines and rituals that would be part of a new religious movement that he called Scientology. His works have become guiding texts for the Church of Scientology and a number of affiliated organizations that address diverse topics as business administration, literacy and rehabilitation.

Although many aspects of Hubbard's life are challenged, there is a general consensus on some basic information. Born in Tilden , Nebraska , he spent much of his childhood in Helena , Montana . He traveled to Asia and the South Pacific in the late 1920s after his father, an officer in the U.S. Navy , have been transferred to a base in Guam . He studied at George Washington University in Washington, DC in the early 1930s, before leaving to start a career as a writer of stories for pulp magazines. He briefly served in the Reserve of the Marine Corps and was a naval officer during World War II , commanding two ships, the USS YP-422 and USS PC-815, for a short period of time. He was removed from the two commands when his superiors considered him incapable of leading. The last months of his service were spent in a hospital treating a peptic ulcer .

Hubbard later developed Dianetics, "the modern science of mental health." He founded Scientology in 1952 and oversaw the growth of the Church of Scientology into a worldwide organization. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he spent most of his time at sea with his personal fleet of ships as "Commodore" of the Sea Organization, an elite group of Scientologists. His expedition ended when the United Kingdom , Greece , Spain , Portugal and Venezuela closed its ports to it. At one point, a court in Australia revoked the status of religion in the church. Similarly, a court in France convicted Hubbard of fraud. He returned to the United States in 1975, going on retreat in the desert of California . In 1983, Hubbard was named co-conspirator in a scheme of indirect international information infiltration and theft project called "Operation Snow White". He spent his last years on a ranch near Creston, California, dying in 1986.
