A taxi driver from New York writes:
"I was appointed to an address where I should pick up a passenger. When I arrived I honked loudly. After a few minutes of waiting time I honked again. Since it was the last ride of my shift, I was about to go away, it took too long for me. But instead I parked the car, walked to the door and knocked.

"Just a minute", answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something is tedious drawn on the floor.

After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman over 90 years in front of me. She wore a dress and a hat with a veil, as someone from a 40s movie.

At her side was a small suitcase. The apartment looked empty, as if no one lived there for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, all the cupboards were empty. There was not even dishes in the kitchen. In the corner was a moving box filled with photos and glassware.

"Would you carry my bags to the car, " she told me. I put the suitcase in the trunk and then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly to the taxi.
She thanked me for my kindness. "No problem, " I told her, "I'm just trying to handle as much as I would want my mother treated as such."

"Oh, you're such a good boy, she said. As we sat in the cab, she gave me an address and asked, "Can I drive through downtown?"
"It's not the shortest way, " I answered quickly.
"Oh, that's nothing, " she said. "I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice. "

I looked in the rearview mirror. Her eyes were shining. "I have no family, " she continued in a softer voice. "The doctor says I do not have very long." When I heard that, I just had to turn off the meter: "What route should I take?"

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as Aufzugswärterin.
We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband lived as a couple, on a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she went dancing as a young girl.
Sometimes they asked me to drive slowly on a certain building or a corner. She stared into the darkness, saying nothing.

When the first rays of the sun appeared on the horizon, she said: "I'm tired. It is time "We drove silently to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home with a driveway.
Two nurses came to the taxi. They were worried and watched every move. You must have expected.

I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase and placed it in front of the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.
"How much do I owe you?" The moment she asked the nurses to give her her purse.
"Nothing, " I said. "But you must earn their livelihood, " she said.
"There are other passengers, " I responded.

Without thinking at the moment, I leaned over to her and gave her a warm hug. She squeezed me tightly close to him.
"You have an old woman gave a little moment of joy, " she said. "Thank you."
I squeezed her hand and then walked towards the sunrise to the taxi ... Behind me, a door shut. This sound seemed to me like a complete life.

I got no more passengers more and drove aimlessly lost in thought through the area. For the rest of the day I could hardly speak. What would have happened if I had refused to make this journey or after I honked, would be just left?
Looking back, I do not think I've ever done anything more important in my life. "

A Web Site as 18-Ring Circus of Supply and Demand

ISA HUMMEL is 36 and lives in San Francisco. She found her husband at one of the most frequented spots in the Bay Area: Craigslist.org.
She started using the site five years ago, to find a roommate. Then, when she was moving into a new apartment, she used Craigslist to find moving boxes and, after she moved, to give them away. She needed a new stove, so she found one on Craigslist (and used it to find a home for the old one), and since she needed someone with a truck to help deliver the range, she found that on Craigslist as well

How Technology Will Defeat Terrorism

In transit across Manhattan on any given day are some 4 million letters, 3 million people, half a million motor vehicles and their contents, and half a million parcels—any of which may be carrying something lethal. Step by step, cities like New York must now learn to watch and track everything that moves. Airport screening is coming to much of the rest of civilian life; but it will have to be much smoother, faster, more accurate screening than airports have today, or life will just grind to a halt.
However much local governments may yearn for a one-stop federal solution to their new security problems, much of the initiative and innovation will almost certainly be left to them

The Unknown
As we know,
There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know
We don't know.

Glass Box
You know,...e things
Trying to pick up the prize,
And you can't find it.
It's—
And it's all these arms are going down in there,
And so you keep dropping it
And picking it up again and moving it,
But—
Some of you are probably too young to remember those—
Those glass boxes,
But—
But they used to have them
At all the gas stations

  • Avatar Miz fun I am moving from London to US, does anyone know a cargo company that can ship my goods?
Feb 07, 2012 by Miz fun | Posted in Packing & Preparation

I recently got married and have to move to Nashville Tennessee. I have so much stuff I want to take with me. If anyone has ever moved to US from UK please tell me how you sent your things. Thanks guys

    • Seriously re-look at the things you own,

Apart from clothes, jewellry and some sentimental items (incl photos) everything else should be left behind.

Electrical things are not compatible, and … thing you need is to ship lots of stuff that was once useful in the UK, and will end up never leaving the boxes because your life/lifestyle will be different.

Use this as a complete lifestyle refresher ;)
